Retrofit Floors with
Electric Radiant Heat
Radiant floor heat
can now be easily installed
underneath existing
floors. If you can access your floor
joists from below,
you are a perfect candidate for
retrofitting your floors
with energy-efficient radiant heat.
The two most highly
recommended options are RetroHeat and FloorHeat. Both systems
are very affordable
and allow you to install radiant
heat to your
existing floors without extensive
remodeling or tearing up your
existing floors.
Though the RetroHeat
and FloorHeat
radiant floor
heating systems feature very
distinct differences, both
systems can be installed quickly
and easily. The floor
heating elements consist of
thin warming panels that can
be cut to the desired length on site
and then stapled between
the floor joists. The RetroHeat and
FloorHeat systems
effectively heat virtually all types
of floor surfaces.

Options for Retrofitting Floors with
Electric Radiant Heat

RetroHeat - Radiant Floor
Heating System
The RetroHeat
floor
heating system was
designed specifically for
providing
electric radiant heat to
existing floors by accessing
the
floor joists below. So, if
you have open access to your
floor joists, now you can
add the comfort and
efficiency of
radiant
floor
heat to your home. The
RetroHeat system can be
installed to heat tile,
hardwood, laminates and
carpeted
flooring.
When installing
RetroHeat, the heating
panels are cut to the
required
length and then stapled
between the floor joists.
The
panels are available for
joists in 12, 16, and
24-inch
widths. (Measurements are
taken from the center of
once
joist to the other, not the
distance in between the
joists.) After stapling the
heating panels between the
floor joists, the electrical
connections are made and
common batt insulation is
installed underneath the
heating element. The
insulation
enhances the energy
efficiency by minimizing
heat loss
and directing the
warmth upwards through the
floor.
The
RetroHeat under floor
heating system consists of
heating
panels, connection
materials, and unique digital
thermostat
that includes a 16-amp GFCI
breaker and floor sensor for
accurate programming.

FloorHeat - Low-Voltage
Radiant Heat for Existing
Floors
FloorHeat is light,
thin, flexible and durable,
making
it very effective solution
for providing radiant heat
for
existing floors. It can be
cut on site and can be used
to heat
just about any type of floor
surface. While FloorHeat
is also commonly used for
new construction jobs, it is
also a
popular choice for
retrofitting existing floors
with
radiant heat.
Like the
RetroHeat system, FloorHeat
is installed between
the joists of the existing
floor. (The FloorHeat
heating
elements
are available in widths
of 9 and
12-inches.)
The
polymer heating element can
be stapled and nailed
through for easy
installation. Another
attractive feature of
FloorHeat
is that it is
self-regulating. This
means that when
the ambient temperature
rises, electrical resistance
increases and the
consumption of electricity
decreases,
creating a win win
situation. Energy
consumption – and
costs – drop. So
it is a very efficient
radiant
heating system, drawing only
the energy required to
maintain the ideal
temperature.
