The condensing <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_d64ccab8be778de40789377a583ecebd\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">boiler<\/span> (water heater) can be powered by any energy source, including <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_063756137dbac4301beaf06e0eb065b4\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">natural gas<\/span>, electricity, oil, wood, or even solar collectors. Because electric snowmelt systems do not rely on heating water heater before pumping the liquid through <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_c07fe8cfd853fe8e755a9ba68e897a14\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">PEX tubing<\/span>, the response time is considerably less than that of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_be4cef2f710f72d8bdc2cfa6d889ad4b\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">hydronic<\/span> systems.<\/p>\n<p><b>Fully Automated Snow Melting Systems<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The fully<a title=\"Automated heated driveways and snow melting systems\" href=\"\/snow-melting\/automated-heated-driveways\/\"> automated driveway heating system<\/a> features heat cable, a control unit (controller), and a high-performance snow sensor (activation device). One of two types of sensors (aerial or pavement mount) can be installed, depending on the project. <a title=\"Aerial mount snow sensor\" href=\"\/snow-melting\/aerial-snow-sensor\/\">Aerial mount sensors<\/a> are typically used for residential heated driveways while <a title=\"Pavement mount snow sensor\" href=\"\/snow-melting\/in-ground-sensor\/\">pavement mount snow sensors<\/a> are more commonly used in large commercial snow melting applications.<\/p>\n<p>When the snow sensor detects precipitation and temperatures are below a designated set point (usually set at 39 F), the sensor signals the master control unit, initiating startup of the snow melting system. While the driveway snow melting system is fully automated, it can also be activated manually. The controller includes a manual override function for times when snowdrifts or ice forms because of wind or shaded areas.
