In an effort to prevent more accidents, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CDOT) set out to build a runaway truck ramp. CDOT chose <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_ce0e1f1fead9edc4e49614c5bc4b15ba\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Warmzone<\/span>&rsquo;s <a title=\"ClearZone heated driveways and snow melting systems\" href=\"\/snow-melting\/clearzone\/\">ClearZone snowmelt system<\/a> to optimize the ramp&rsquo;s safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pspace\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2817\" src=\"http:\/\/www.warmzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/cdot-saw-cut80.jpg\" alt=\"Using saw-cut technology for installing radiant heat\" width=\"291\" height=\"252\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"pspace\">The truck ramp is located in a mountainous metropolitan <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_a9b22457fd36343dd6f04bedb1d170d1\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>area<\/span> of Connecticut, which created a unique problem. Because of limited space, the ramp could only be 480 feet long and required three metal nets to slow vehicle speed in the event of brake failure. The ramp walls are two feet thick and five feet high and reinforced from within with steel to stop a car from breaking through the ramp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pspace\">The nets coupled with the thick high walls made traditional methods of snow removal virtually impossible. There was no place to put plowed snow, and the metal safety nets had to be removed each time snow removal was required. The safety of the ramp was severely compromised when snow or ice gathered, making removal critical. A <a title=\"Radiant snow melting systems\" href=\"\/snow-melting\/\">snow melting system<\/a> was the best option to keep the ramp safe and functioning properly all year-round.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pspace\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2820\" src=\"http:\/\/www.warmzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/cdot-saw-cut-sm1.jpg\" alt=\"Grooves cut for heat cable\" width=\"219\" height=\"159\"\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2819\" src=\"http:\/\/www.warmzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/cdot-saw-cut-44sm2.jpg\" alt=\"Retrofitting a runaway truck ramp with radiant heat\" width=\"231\" height=\"162\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"pspace\"><em>&nbsp; &nbsp; Views of grooves cut for <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_142748a752fd79d8fbef3a6819628e36\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">radiant heat<\/span> cable to be installed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"pspace\">Projects of this scale usually require more installation expertise than that of a small snowmelt system, which is why <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_ce0e1f1fead9edc4e49614c5bc4b15ba\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Warmzone<\/span>&rsquo;s technical specialist, Dan Mignogna, traveled to Connecticut to assist with the installation. With over 32 years of experience as an <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_8b786adc12c7e76cce92156730b3dab9\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">electrician<\/span> and an expert in radiant heating, Mignogna worked closely with the CDOT team to determine the proper system installation and wiring of the automatic snow sensors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pspace\" align=\"left\">The easiest method for installing a snowmelt system is beneath new <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_9020707e1f17539a19650bb9e55ab8c1\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asphalt<\/span>, pavers or <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_568f830d3e920efaca9c000fbe6aa146\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">concrete<\/span>. For this project, the ClearZone&nbsp;cables needed to be installed into existing <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_9020707e1f17539a19650bb9e55ab8c1\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asphalt<\/span> using <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_15dcb63744012fe00fae624fcc6922f0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">concrete saw<\/span>-cutting technology. The cables were embedded 3 inches into the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_9020707e1f17539a19650bb9e55ab8c1\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asphalt<\/span> and&nbsp;covered using sealant. Each row of CZ&nbsp;cable was spaced 6 inches apart. The entire project required 12,960 feet of ClearZone snow melting&nbsp;cable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pspace\" align=\"left\">The CDOT runaway truck ramp is scheduled for completion in early September of 2008.
