Rubber tire applicators are okay as long as the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_9020707e1f17539a19650bb9e55ab8c1\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asphalt<\/span> temperature is below the maximum rated temperature for the heating cables.<\/li>\n<li>The operating weight of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_9020707e1f17539a19650bb9e55ab8c1\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asphalt<\/span> roller should not exceed 1,000 pounds. (The <strong><a title=\"ClearZone heat cable for automated snow melting systems\" href=\"\/snow-melting\/clearzone\/\">heat cable<\/a><\/strong> is designed to&nbsp;handle 8.9kN before the insulation is damaged, which will cause the cable to fail.) A smaller roller will take more time, but decreases the chance of damaging the heating cable.<\/li>\n<li>A roller with 30 kN or less is allowable when heating cable is in <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_568f830d3e920efaca9c000fbe6aa146\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">concrete<\/span> and the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_568f830d3e920efaca9c000fbe6aa146\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">concrete<\/span> is then covered is <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_9020707e1f17539a19650bb9e55ab8c1\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asphalt<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>When compacting\/rolling on a <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_8e2d80f5bc71744da1488331b446b0eb\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>grade<\/span>, do not stop the roller. Stopping and resuming the roller may stretch and break the heat cable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Do NOT dump large quantities of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_9020707e1f17539a19650bb9e55ab8c1\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asphalt<\/span> on small sections of the heating cables. Doing this may cause damage to the cable because of excessive, focused heat. Ideally, the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_9020707e1f17539a19650bb9e55ab8c1\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asphalt<\/span> should be applied by hand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4835\" src=\"http:\/\/www.warmzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/asphalt-heat-cable-2027.jpg\" alt=\"Installing a heated asphalt driveway\" width=\"468\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.warmzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/asphalt-heat-cable-2027.jpg 468w, https:\/\/www.warmzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/asphalt-heat-cable-2027-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do NOT cut or alter the heating cable. <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_8c245b76815ca0ecd1ba719ee36a9505\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>Mat<\/span> tape may be cut, but the heating cable must never be cut.<\/li>\n<li>Embed all of the heating cable and the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_5acdd5fe9f6206ff4aa8ceed81a038e3\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">splice<\/span> in the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_9020707e1f17539a19650bb9e55ab8c1\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asphalt<\/span>. Leave a buffer of 4 to 6 inches of unheated <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_9020707e1f17539a19650bb9e55ab8c1\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asphalt<\/span> around the edge of the heated <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_a9b22457fd36343dd6f04bedb1d170d1\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>area<\/span>. This allows for adjustment of paving surface edges without damaging the heating cable.<\/li>\n<li>Handle heating cables carefully &ndash; use extreme care with tools such as shovels, rakes and wheel barrels to avoid damaging the cables.<\/li>\n<li>Verify cable integrity by checking <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_0970b276dce0369f94e49335e47769f6\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">resistance<\/span> often during installation.<\/li>\n<li>It is important that the snow melting system be wired by a licensed, qualified <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_8b786adc12c7e76cce92156730b3dab9\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">electrician<\/span> and in accordance with local laws, codes, regulations, and <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_167751004076c8f54950210b2498beb3\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>NEC<\/span> guidelines.<\/li>\n<li>Ground sensors\/cups should not be exposed to temperatures above 80&deg;C (176&deg;F).<\/li>\n<li>A perimeter of a maximum of 12 inches of <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_9020707e1f17539a19650bb9e55ab8c1\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asphalt<\/span> should exist around the embedded cables.
