Electric Radiant Floor Heating Options

Radiant floor heat has proven to be the most efficient home heating technology available today. As more consumers discover the benefits of radiant heat, heated floors are routinely being included in the construction of many of today’s new homes and commercial facilities. The heated floor systems are either electric or hydronic (water-based). Both electric and hydronic floor heating systems efficiently deliver consistent, evenly spread warmth from the floor up to heat the room. Electric systems utilize heat resistance cable or thin heating panels embedded beneath the floor while hydronic systems heat specially treated water that is pumped through a closed loop of PEX tubing under the floor.

Electric Floor Heating System Features and Benefits

Floor heating system installed under a tile floor

In addition to operating on renewable energy, electric floor heating systems operate silently and feature no moving parts, so they require no regular upkeep. These are attractive features since homeowners don’t want to have to worry about - or pay for - yearly checkups and monthly filter changes and maintenance. And unlike forced-air systems, the heat is distributed evenly from the floor up, efficiently providing comfortable warmth for the entire room. There are no hot or cold spots, and the heated floors provide ideal comfort for small children who typically spend most of their time playing on the floor.

Traditional radiators require high temperatures (as high as 215°F) to heat a room. Forced-air systems that use conventional gas furnaces require high temperatures (between 140°F-170°F at the supply plenum) in order to effectively heat a room. And warm air blowing from vents heat the air nearest the vent first before rising and cooling, which makes rooms prone to “cold spots”.

Radiant electric underfloor heating systems are effective for heating a variety of floor surfaces, including tile, stone, laminate, hardwood, and carpet. Warmzone carries one of the largest selections of heating elements in the industry, including thin, self-regulating panels, near paper-thin "film" elements, heat resistance cable, heated floor mats, and underlayment membranes. Radiant heat can be easily customized to heat any room in the home to provide comfort wherever you are. With the installation of a heating system discreetly under your flooring, your home will remain consistently comfortable every day. And because of its efficiency (with virtually no heat loss), radiant floor heat can provide a savings on heating costs of up to 15 percent over traditional heating methods.

Electric floor heat can also be installed to heat existing floors. If you can access the floor joists, you can staple up the thin RetroHeat film heating element between the joists and then covering the element by stapling up a layer of batt insulation. The heat is directed up to the floor to provide efficient heat for the room.

Radiant under floor heating systems are controlled by an advanced thermostat that is available with an in-floor sensor that detects floor temperature as well as an ambient sensor to detect room temperature. Given the many types of electric under floor heating systems that are available, it is beneficial for consumers to be able to talk with radiant heat experts at Warmzone to learn about the specific features and advantages of each system, and how the different heating elements will perform when it comes to heating their floor types. Radiant heat can be safely installed to warm virtually all types of traditional and modern floors. In addition to the sublime comfort and unparalleled efficiency of electric heated floors, they are also maintenance-free, so you don't have to worry about regular maintenance costs or filter changes.
