Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions - Roof De-icing

Product Questions

Q: What Roof De-icing products does Warmzone® recommend?
A: Warmzone sells a variety of roof de-icing systems for just about any type of application type or roofing. Each has unique characteristics. To best determing what solution is best for you, please contact one of our radiant heat experts. We will be happy to learn about your project and help determine which system would best meet your specific project requirements. Our roof heating products range from low-voltage polymer heating elements to rugged self-regulating heat cable. Call 888-488-9276 for more information.

Q: What is Roof Heating?
A: Warmzone roof heating systems include a variety of top quality roof de-icing solutions. Several types of radiant heat products are available for the various types of roofing materials. Some roof heating systems include aluminum panels with self-regulating heat cable while one of the most popular roof heating systems feature a thin, flexible polymer heating element that can be installed discreetly under shingles as well as metal roofs. This RoofHeat™ STEP® system is one of the most advanced - and popular - roof de-icing solutions on the market. The maleable heating elements can also be installed in roof valleys to facilitate runoff. When mounted along your roof eaves and/or valleys, these roof heating systems eliminate ice and snow (and subsequent ice dams) in those areas, keeping your home or business perimeter safer and reducing the risk of winter roof damage.

Q: When should I choose Heat Cables vs. other Radiant Heating Methods?
A: Melting snow with cables on roofs is sometimes the only available solution for existing roofs. Our self-regulating ice melting cables are durable, high quality products that can be installed to minimize roof ice dams from forming and help prevent damage caused by snow and ice.

Our gutter heating cables are the ideal solutions for preventing dangerous and damaging icicles from forming. It is recommended that gutter melting cables be used in conjunction with a roof de-icing systems. Our cable systems are also activated by an automatic sensor that is mounted near the gutter. They conserve energy by only turning on when necessary.

Q: What is RoofHeat/FloorHeat?
A: Low-voltage RoofHeat STEP roof de-icing systems consist of thin (3/64-inch) homogeneous, semi-conductive polyethelene heating elements, available in 3, 9 and 12 inch widths. The element features self-regulating technology (PTC Nanotechnology), which allows it to heat with maximum power in cold environments and use less electricity as it warms up. The elements come in rolls that can be easily rolled out over the area to be heated. The RoofHeat STEP is designed to be protected against UV rays and other potential physical damages. The heating element can be stapled to the roof decking. Shingles are then secured with nails directly on top. Nails can pierce the RoofHeat STEP heating element as long as the nails do not come in contact with any other metal objects. The largest RoofHeat STEP system (zone) will cover approximately 450 square feet.
Multiple zones are sometimes required for larger projects. Heating at least 6-inches above the roof eaves is recommended.

Q: Are your roof de-icing systems manually or automatically activated?
A: Roof de-icing systems can be activated with an automatic gutter-mounted switch, temperature sensor, or manual timer.

Q: What are the power requirements for your systems?
A: The power requirements vary from system to system. Generally, cable heating systems require a 240V 30-amp breaker for every 300-square-feet you are heating.

Q: Do you have local dealers?
A: Warmzone sells directly to the end user and can ensure that you get the best pricing possible. Our internal staff of experienced professionals can answer your questions and assist you in selecting the best system for your application. Warmzone also sells through certified independent installers that can assist you in your product selection and installation.

Design Questions

Q: Does Warmzone provide detailed layouts for purchased systems?
A: Yes. Warmzone provides detailed layouts for most systems at the price of $0.35 per square foot. (This price is subject to change. Our professional radiant heat system designers evaluate your radiant heating system and create a detailed AutoCAD of your system layout. You'll know the electrical requirements, technical specifications and system performance expectations before one foot of heat cable is installed. Because radiant heat systems depend so much on proper installation, this service is extremely valuable, and can save installers headaches and money by providing clear, consise system information in preparation of the system being installed.

If you're checking around and evaluating your radiant heating options, be sure to compare product price, quality, and installation support and design services. If you're going to install radiant heat, do it right with experienced professionals.

Please call 888-488-9276 for more information.)
